The best convertible cribs of 2019

The Best convertible cribs - top rated convertible baby cribs

The Best convertible cribs of 2019

Choosing the right equipment for a baby can be quite difficult, especially if you don’t have any experiences yet. We all want only the best for our children, but most of us are limited by the budget. That’s why the models in our list are not just the best convertible cribs you can choose, but more or less friendly to your wallet as well.

Since babies spend a lot of time sleeping, the choice of a baby crib that is both, safe and comfortable is extremely important. All models on our list are completely accordant with that!

Before you start, I want to reassure you, that cribs on our list don’t lag behind high budget model on the market. I am not saying that our choices are cheap, I am just comparing them with 1000+ dollars cribs.

The funny thing is that high budget cribs actually didn’t get more points after our reviews. Not only they get fewer points because of the high price, but we also can’t say they are more comfortable or appealing from convertible models on our “best of” list.

Comparing the price and their features, convertible baby cribs on our list have the best value for the money!

The Best convertible cribs in 2019

The winner:

Graco Benton 4-in-1 convertible crib

The Best convertible cribs

THE GOOD:

  • it is a lifetime crib for your child
  • it has an incredibly low price for the quality you get
  • it is a great solution for smaller nurseries or twin rooms
  • adjustable mattress support
  • it stays sturdy after all conversions
  • it has a minimalists, elegant and timeless design
  • two designs for a full-size bed
  • easy to assemble
  • easy to convert
  • meets and even exceed all required safety standards

THE BAD:

  • we were trying really hard, but couldn’t find any bad thing about Benton
  • maybe I can mention only a few visible holes from the screws, but that is the same with almost all cribs, including high budget models

More about Graco Benton 5-in-1 convertible crib:

I didn’t make a mistake in the name. Lots of people call Benton a 5-in-1, not 4-in-1 convertible crib. The name can mislead, as someone could think he can convert the crib into something more, than “just” into a toddler bed, daybed, and full-size bed.

You should know that Benton got the 5 in its name because of the last conversion, where you can pick between a full-size bed with or without a footboard.

STRONG & SAFE, WITH SLEEK DESIGN:

We were surprised how strong and sturdy it is after all conversions, especially because it belongs to low budget cribs.

Another thing we love about Benton is its minimalists’ designed frame. Benton is a full-size crib which doesn’t occupy a lot of space! For many of us, especially for those who live in smaller apartments, that could be very convenient.

If that is not enough, check up some other cool features the Graco’s Benton can offer to you:

  1. it has a cute, little arch on the back side of the crib
  2. it is made from solid New Zealand pine wood, and available in five different colors: driftwood, espresso, pebble gray, white and whitewash
  3. the height of the front railing is 34,8″, which makes it a good choice for short moms as well
  4. the toddler bed has an optional safety guardrail*

* You have to buy a toddler safety guardrail separately, but we don’t see that as a down point. Why? Because this is common for all baby cribs, and even with the extra purchase, overall you still get an affordable convertible crib.

Oh, another interesting fact. If you don’t want to spend extra money, you can use Benton’s toddler bed without a guardrail. How! You get a toddler bed by removing the front railing and placing the mattress into the lowest position.

That is not unusual for convertible cribs, as lots of models on the market even don’t have an optional safety guardrail. Some parents seem fine with that, while others are calmer with a safety rail.

I would decide on a safety guardrail as it is not expensive at all and offers additional safeness to my child. But this is my personal opinion. It’s OK in both ways.

Runner-up:

Delta Children Emery 4-in-1 convertible crib

The Best convertible cribs

THE GOOD:

  • it can be a lifetime bed for your child
  • a timeless design
  • affordable choice
  • you can adjust the mattress to 3 different heights
  • strong and sturdy wood construction
  • meets and even exceed all safety standards
  • airy, open slats on all four sides of the crib
  • easy to assemble
  • easy to convert

THE BAD:

  • we didn’t find anything bad about it
  • some parents rated it lower because they didn’t get a safety guardrail in the package (That is not the manufacturers’ fault since they had clearly stated it has to be purchased separately!)

More about Dream On Me Emery 4-in-1 convertible crib:

As the arched cribs are very popular amongst parents, we were thrilled that another arched model got so many points that we can place it amongst the best convertible cribs.

Of course, the arch is not the only feature which would place Emery amongst the best models, but it is a beautiful addition to its sleek, aesthetic design.

We love Emery’s classic elegance which meets modern comfort. If you like it, you can choose amongst three different colors: dark chocolate, gray, or white.

Emery is a 4-in-1 convertible crib, which means you can convert it into three bigger beds:

  1. toddler bed
  2. daybed
  3. full-size bed

Unfortunately, you have to buy a safety guardrail for the toddler bed. That will cost you around 40 dollars. Overall the price is still very affordable, so we don’t see any significant issues because of that.

If you intend to convert it into a full-size bed, you have to buy a full-size metal bed frame and a big mattress as well. That’s the same with all 4-in-1 conversion cribs, therefore that can’t be defined as negative Emery’s characteristic.

Dream On Me Emery is a good and affordable choice for you. It is a safe crib, with all features you can expect from the convertible type.

The best 3-in-1 convertible crib:

Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 convertible crib

The Best convertible cribs

THE GOOD:

  • eco-conscious design for modern moms
  • retro modern look, with rounded spindles around the crib
  • it grows with your child
  • safety guardrail for a toddler bed is included in the price
  • beautiful non-toxic finish, available in multiple colors
  • 4 level adjustable mattress support
  • sturdy crib, with solid wood construction
  • toddler rail is in the package
  • meets and even exceed all required safety standards

THE BAD:

  • if you use light colored models, you can see metal mattress support in some positions, but you can efficiently hide it with a beautiful crib skirt

More about Babyletto Hudson:

Yes, it costs little more than our first two choices, but if you are on the market for high quality and beautiful convertible crib, this is the one you have to consider.

The great thing about all Babyletto cribs is that you get everything in the package, and Hudson is, of course, no exception. You get all the parts you need for the conversions besides the crib.

STYLE:

Babyletto Hudson is a European style crib. It is a modern and eco-friendly crib, which offers great versatility to the family.

It has an open design with spindles around the crib, which opens the crib’s construction and enable a good airflow through the crib.

A GOOD CHOICE FOR PETITE MOMS:

Hudson is a low profile crib. That is because of Hudson’s frame design and shorter legs, not because of the shorter railings! The crib is not too high or bulky at all, so petite moms won’t have problems with laying the sleeping baby above the rails. A perfect choice for them!

Babyletto Hudson or Babyletto Lolly

At this point I want to mention another great model from Babyletto: Lolly 3-in-1 convertible crib is slightly younger but as good as Hudson. Since they are practically the same, we haven’t included Lolly on this list, but it certainly belongs amongst the best convertible cribs.

The only differences between Lolly and Hudson are available colors and the design of a crib’s legs. If you are interested in how Lolly looks, you can read our Babyletto Lolly 3-in-1 convertible crib Review.

If that is not enough, here are other characteristics that persuade us to put Hudson on our list:

  1. an open design, with stylishly rounded spindles
  2. a wide color selection, even in two tones
  3. the assembling of the crib is easy and hassle-free
  4. Babyletto offers a Junior conversion kit for the Hudson, so it is actually a 4-in-1 convertible crib

The best bang for the buck:

Union 3-in-1 convertible crib

The Best convertible cribs

THE GOOD:

  • a really good value for the price
  • a wide color selection
  • it grows with your child
  • perfect choice for short moms
  • an affordable price
  • adjustable mattress support
  • lightweight of the crib
  • meets all required safety standards
  • a good choice for short moms

THE BAD:

  • the same as the majority of cribs in the market, Union has few visible holes and screws

More about Union 3-in-1 convertible crib:

Union crib is made by DaVinci, so we have no doubts about its quality and safeness, although it is very cheap.

DESIGN:

Union is a simple, yet elegant crib, which suits almost to any nursery furniture. It has clean lines and wider color selection than almost all DaVinci’s cribs.

The crib is also very light, but we didn’t notice any wobbling, which is great!

CONVERTIBILITY:

You can convert it into a toddler bed and daybed.

Union doesn’t have a safety guardrail! For a toddler bed, you have to remove the front railing and set up the mattress into the lowest position. Some parents don’t feel safe with such an arrangement, while lots of others seem cool with it. That is completely your decision!

Another great thing about this model is that you can actually convert it into a full-size bed. Because the heights of the headboard and footboard are the same, the twin bed might look a little funky, but with DaVinci’s full-size conversion kit you have that choice, which is excellent.

Best vintage design:

DaVinci Jenny Lind 3-in-1 convertible crib

Best convertible baby cribs

THE GOOD:

  • the largest color selection we have ever seen
  • it grows with your child
  • it is a convertible and portable crib in one
  • good value for the price
  • wheels with locking mechanism
  • adjustable mattress support

THE BAD:

  • the difference in price for classic colors and additional choices
  • Jenny Lind changing table is not available in all colors

More about DaVinci Jenny Lind:

First of all, an award-winning vintage-inspired Jenny Lind crib is consistently recognized as one of the best cribs in the market. With Jenny, DaVinci brought vintage-inspired charm to the nurseries, and we love it!

It is not a secret that Jenny Lind is a unique convertible crib which immediately caught our attention. Why? Not only it has the largest color selection we have ever seen, but it has wheels too. So it is not just a convertible, but a portable crib too!

Our review showed us we were not wrong, as we were not disappointed at all. Jenny Lind is certainly the best convertible crib on wheels you can find!

WHEELS:

Wheels glide smoothly and have a good locking mechanism which will hold the crib in place while the child is in it.

Just don’t forget to lock them!

CONVERTIBILITY:

What about Jenny’s conversions? The same as with other 3-in-1 convertible cribs, it can convert into a toddler bed and daybed.

The safety guardrail is not included in the price, so if you want it, that will cost you another $70. It is not the cheapest guardrail on the market, but it’s far from the most expensive ones too!

DaVinci’s Jenny Lind is one of the most wanted cribs by parents, and we can see why. The quality is amazing, and it is a safe and sturdy crib, although it is on wheels.

Don’t forget it also grows with your child and that you can pick amongst many funky colors!

The Best convertible crib with changing table:

Storkcraft Portofino 4-in-1 convertible crib with changing table

The Best convertible cribs

THE GOOD:

  • one piece of furniture for multiple uses
  • space saving model
  • it grows with your child
  • convertible crib
  • attached changer with three drawers and three shelves on the back
  • a safe crib
  • detached changer can be transformed into a nightstand
  • adjustable mattress support
  • it meets or even exceeds all required safety standards

THE BAD:

  • a higher price as a standard convertible crib, but it has integrated changing table
  • cover of a changing table is not in standard size, so its difficult to find it (but you get one with the crib)

More about Storkcraft Portofino combo crib:

Storkcraft Portofino is one of the best-looking combo cribs on the market. Because of the same reason, it is probably the most desirable combo model amongst parents as well.

Of course, Portofino is not on our list just because of its aesthetic design, but more because of its quality and versatility.

If you don’t have enough space for a separately placed convertible crib and changing table, a full-size convertible crib like Portofino might be the best choice for you.

Because of the attached changing table, you will have everything you need for your baby and beyond.

CONVERTIBILITY:

Storkcraft Portofino converts into:

  1. toddler bed
  2. daybed
  3. full-size adult bed

The conversions are the same to standard convertible cribs. First, you can convert the crib into a toddler bed, but you have to buy Stork Craft toddler guardrail separately. That is common to all convertible cribs, and it will cost you around 40 dollars in this case.

Later you can transform the crib into a daybed without any additional purchase.

When you use Storkcraft Portofino as a toddler bed and daybed, the changing table stays attached to the bed. If you don’t use it as a changer anymore, it is still a convenient storage space for the child’s belongings.

For the transition from nursery to adolescence and beyond, you need a Stork Craft full-size conversion kit. That is a metal bed frame, which connects the headboard and footboard. Of course, you need a bigger mattress as well.

A CHANGING TABLE:

The coolest thing about this crib is a convenient use of changing table. At first, you use it as a storage for baby belongings and changing her nappies. It includes three roomy drawers in the front and three open shelves on the back.

If you decide for final conversion into a full-size bed, that is not the end for a changing table. Why? Because you can use a detached changer as a convenient nightstand beside the bed.

The Best mini convertible crib:

Dream On Me Aden 4-in-1 convertible crib

The Best convertible cribs

THE GOOD:

  • perfect for smaller apartments
  • perfect for grandparents house
  • grows with your child
  • adjustable mattress support
  • two different designs for the last conversion
  • available in many colors
  • sturdy crib
  • meets all required safety standards

THE BAD:

  • your baby will outgrow it sooner because it is a mini crib

More about Dream On Me Aden:

If you don’t have enough space for a full-size crib, a mini crib is a perfect solution for you. As it doesn’t occupy a lot of space, a mini crib is also a good choice for grandparents or caregivers house.

Mini convertible cribs have almost the same features as their full-size sisters, just in smaller dimensions. The second conversion, where mini cribs convert directly into a daybed, is their only difference besides measurements. And Dream On Me Aden is not an exception.

So what are the most important things you should know about mini convertible cribs, including Aden?

  1. The mini crib’s height is the same to the full-size cribs, so your baby can’t climb out of the crib sooner.
  2. Mini cribs are as safe as their bigger sisters.
  3. Mini cribs skip toddler bed and convert directly into a daybed.
  4. Mini cribs can convert all to the twin bed, so your child can use them long too.

You might wonder why Aden is a 4-in-1 convertible crib if it skips a toddler bed phase.

That is because a twin bed has two possible designs, with or without a footboard.

Aden conversions:

  • crib
  • daybed
  • twin bed with footboard
  • twin bed without a footboard

Besides the great ratings after our reviews, we like Aden’s simplicity that can compete with full-size cribs.

2019 Convertible crib buying guide

Is a convertible crib worth the money?

Yes, it is, without a doubt! And there is not only one reason for that, because many things speak in their favor.

Here are the most important reasons, why a convertible crib is the better choice as a classic crib:

  1. Most of the cribs on the market are convertible, so you have a wider choice if you decide on the convertible design.
  2. You probably think a classic crib is way cheaper from the convertible crib, but that is far from the truth.
  3. You don’t have to convert your crib if you don’t want to. As I already said, you won’t spend more money on it, so why would you not gave yourself an option if you decide on the conversion when the time comes.
  4. As a crib, the convertible type is entirely the same as a classic crib!
  5. You can always convert it back into a crib if you need it. For instance, for a second child.
  6. When your child starts to crawl over the railings, it is time for a bigger bed. If you have a convertible model, you can transform the crib into a toddler bed right away, and your child is safe. Otherwise, you need to buy a bigger bed immediately.

What about dropping side cribs?

No, no and no! They are not safe!

CSPC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) banned the sale of those cribs back in 2011.

There were numerous injuries and even death, so if you have an older drop-side crib at home, please do NOT use it. It’s not worth the risk!

Mini or a full-size convertible crib

Choosing the crib size depends on the available space you have for the crib. Mini convertible cribs are as good as full-size models, but there are some differences amongst them.

  1. Mini convertible cribs take less space, that is why they are a perfect solution for urban lofts, grandparents house, or twin rooms.
  2. Your baby will outgrow mini crib sooner as a full-size crib.
  3. Mini convertible cribs usually skip a toddler bed.
  4. You need a small mattress for a mini, and standard crib mattress for a full-size convertible crib.

Mini cribs have a shorter depth and length, while the height of the crib is equal to a full-size crib. That is why your child won’t climb out from a mini crib sooner than from a full-size model. They are both safe!

If you don’t have space for a full-size crib, a mini convertible model is surely the best solution for you. Mini cribs are also a good alternative for bassinets. They are safer and sturdier from bassinets!

But if you have enough space, we recommend a full-size convertible crib. There is no noticeable difference in price, and your child can use it longer than a mini crib.

Why would I decide on a convertible crib with changing table?

Before I answer this question, I must resolve the possible confusion.

1. You can find convertible cribs with changing table under several names, which often makes a confusion. These are all the same model of the crib:

  • convertible crib with changing table
  • combo crib
  • multipurpose crib
  • multifunctional crib

2. A convertible crib is one piece of furniture, meant for multiple purposes. On the one side of the crib is an attached changing table, which you can later detach and use as a convenient nightstand beside a full-size bed.

3. You can find it in both sizes, like a mini or a full-size combo crib.

So, when to decide on a convertible crib with changing table?

  1. If you don’t have enough space in a nursery, and you can’t fit a crib and separately placed changing table in the room. Although combo cribs are bigger than classic convertible cribs, they are smaller if you add up measurements of an individually arranged crib and changing table.
  2. Because you really like this concept.
  3. Combo cribs are usually cheaper from the combined price of a crib and changing table.
  4. The only thing you shouldn’t forget is: the surface of changing table on a combo crib is smaller from a classic changing table.

What should I know before buying a suitable convertible crib?

1. First of all, the crib must be safe! All the cribs on our “best of” list meet or even exceed all the safety requirements!

2. You need to know how much space you have available for the crib.

3. You need to know how much money you are willing to spend for a crib.

4. You have to exactly know what certain number in the crib’s name means. For instance, conversions for 3-in-1 types can differ from model to model. While one model can convert into a toddler bed and daybed, another can skip a daybed and convert directly into a full-size bed, and so on.

5. Find out if a toddler bed has an optional safety guardrail, and if it is included in the price.

6. If the crib converts into a full-size bed, you have to buy a full-size conversion kit for all models and brands separately. Of course, you need a mattress for a full-size bed too.

Baby’s Little Place tip: If you already know you will convert the crib into one or more bigger models, buy the conversion kit at the same time as a crib. There are more reasons for that:

  1. You might get a discount if you buy all at once.
  2. The conversion kit may not be in stock when you need it.
  3. You will have it at hand when the time for conversion comes.

7. Mattresses usually don’t come with the cribs!

  • I have 2 nieces that are both expecting a baby which is how I came across this information, and I really glad that I did. You have really given me the information I needed as I was thinking about buying them a crib to help them get started when their babies are born.

I had no idea that the drop side was no longer recommended. That is very useful information. I was considering one with drop down side.

One niece is short. I noticed the Union 3 in 1 is listed as being good for short moms. Is this just based on the height of it? I ask this because they have a pretty large dog. It is a great dog, but I still worry if it will be able to jump in.

Cribs have really changed since I have had to buy one. i would never have known how the numbers in the name actually can mean a difference in the models. I really want to thank you for the valuable information.

If/when I do decide to purchase a crib, I will definitely come back here.

    Lee Ann

    • Hello!

Yes, drop-side cribs are banned since 2011. They were great for short moms, but unfortunately, there were too many accidents. You can read more in our article: New baby crib safety standards.

As there are a lot of bulky cribs with huge frames on the market, we always tend to include several low profile cribs on our best of lists too. Short moms really do struggle with placing their sleeping babies over the rails into high cribs.

Although I personally didn’t have such problems, I have lots of friends who made me think about that issue. That’s why I wrote another article with the best cribs for short moms, where you can find more low profile cribs.

Low profile cribs, like Union 3-in-1 convertible crib, or Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 convertible crib are lower because of their shorter legs, not rails. So your baby is as safe as in any other convertible crib, and he won’t “escape” sooner either. Those cribs are as good or even better than lots of convertible cribs, otherwise, we would not place them amongst the best convertible cribs of this year.

But as far as the dog jumping into the low profile convertible crib…. So in theory, this can happen sooner than in higher cribs, but I don’t think it will be a problem. As a dog lover, who is having dogs all my life, I wouldn’t have such concerns. Dogs are very protective to babies and usually treat them as their own, so yeah he will probably lick baby’s face through the crib’s rails if he can, but that’s it. 🙂

You can find more about Union 3-in-1 convertible crib in our review.

      Regards, Ines

  • Hi Ines, very good and informative article about convertible cribs. I like the fact that you focused on not very high budget products, cause most of us couldn`t afford it. I should ask my girlfriend but cause I`m reading your article I can say that from the list I would choose Delta Children Emery 4 in 1 Convertible Crib. You mentioned dropping side cribs, I really didn`t know they are so dangerous.. Are they still on the market? Very good review, thanks for sharing with us!

    • Hi, Luke!

Yeah, we always tend to include products with reasonable prices in our reviews. It is the fact that most of all can’t afford a convertible crib that cost 1000$ or even more.
And from our experiences, you don’t need them! In a sense of quality, some are even worse than models on our “best of list”. They are not better or safer because of the price, as you are paying for the brand not better quality!
Hey, even Royal baby has Babyletto Hudson convertible crib. 🙂

Selling the drooping side cribs is banned since 2011. Those models shouldn’t be on the market anymore!
But even if they are not on the market anymore, I try to emphasize this as often as I can. Many parents decide on a used baby crib, and they should avoid dropping side cribs.
As you already mention, there are a lot of quality low budget convertible cribs on the market, that are much better from drop-side cribs in a sense of safeness.

      Regards, Ines
