What is a 2-in-1 convertible crib?
A convertible crib can convert into different beds and, as such, grows with your child. The higher is the number in its name, into the more beds it can convert.
So, what is a 2-in-1 convertible crib? A 2-in-1 convertible crib is a crib type, which can transform into one bigger bed. With only one possible conversion, it’s the smallest convertible type.
However, not all 2-in-1 baby cribs convert into the same bed. The type of conversion depends on the brand and also differs from model to model.
2-in-1 crib’s conversions
So, your 2-in-1 convertible crib converts into one bigger bed. But, while most of them convert into a toddler bed, some 2-in-1 models transit into a daybed and even a twin or full bed.
2-in-1 convertible crib converts into ONE of the following beds:
- a toddler bed
- a daybed
- a full bed
If your preferred model converts into a toddler bed, check-up thoroughly the construction of a toddler bed. Toddler beds can be with or without a safety guardrail!
The transformation into a toddler bed without a safety guardrail is quick and easy. You have to remove the front rail of the crib and place the mattress into the lowest position.
Some parents are fine with such an arrangement, others want more security, and prefer a toddler bed with a guardrail. If you decide on such a model, be careful! Whether a safety guardrail is included or not, differs from model to model. So you might have to buy it separately!
Lots of 2-in-1 models convert into a daybed. Why? Because it is the cheapest and the easiest way for the manufacturer.
As you don’t have to buy a toddler bed safety guardrail or a full-size conversion kit, it’s, of course, the cheapest option for you too. You get all the needed parts with the original purchase.
The conversion into a daybed is done by removing the crib’s front rail and raising the mattress into a higher position.
If your crib converts into a full bed, you will have to buy a full-size conversion kit. It includes a large bed frame and a mattress pad. Of course, you have to buy a suitable, bigger mattress too.
Things to consider when buying a 2-in-1 convertible crib
Ask yourself the following questions before you make a purchase!
If your 2-in-1 model converts into a toddler bed:
- Does a toddler bed have an optional safety guardrail?
- If it does, is it included in the price?
- If you have to buy it separately, is it available in your crib’s color, and how much does it cost?
If your 2-in-1 model converts into a full bed:
- Where can you buy a full-size conversion kit?
- Where can you buy a fitted mattress?
- How much the conversion kit and a large mattress cost?
Shape and size of a 2-in-1 convertible crib
2-in-1 convertible cribs are usually rectangular, and available in both sizes, as a mini or a full-size baby crib.
Some rare models also have an attached changing table. These are so-called 2-in-1 combo cribs. Combo cribs usually convert into more beds, but you can find 2-in-1 combo models as well.
Combo cribs that convert into a full-size bed have an interesting feature. A detachable changing table converts into a matching nightstand beside the full bed.
Safety of a 2-in-1 convertible crib
Cribs on the market must meet all the required safety standards set by the government! Cribs must be sturdy, non-toxic, lead and phthalate safe, and without dropping sides. Cribs with dropping side are banned since 2011!
There are also other safety measures to consider before using a crib. You can find all the guidelines in our article about new crib safety standards!
Other types of convertible cribs:
The most popular convertible model is a 4-in-1 convertible crib. That’s probably because the bed can grow with your child through all stages of growing up. A 4-in-1 convertible crib can be the only bed you will ever need!
However, if you like designing new rooms and buying new furniture, a 3-in-1 convertible crib might be a better solution for you. You will have a bed for your baby and toddler, with a chance to buy a new teen room when your child outgrows the last 3-in-1 stage.
And that is not all. You can get a 5-in-1 convertible crib or even a 7-in-1 type. But you need to aware, that these cribs don’t offer much more than 4-in-1 models.
For instance, a 5-in-1 convertible crib can convert into a full-size bed with or without a footboard. Those are fourth and fifth conversions. As you can see, this is not a big difference compared to 4-in-1 convertible cribs.
Or another example. For convertible cribs with higher numbers in their names, manufacturers claim you can use a certain bed as a sofa or something else. You can use every daybed the same, so there is no significant difference as well.
