Best rated portable cribs in 2019

What type of portable baby crib do you need? Do you need a wooden crib on wheels or a lightweight travel crib? You see, both models are classified as portable! For younger babies, you can even choose an alternative: a travel nest or bassinet, which are portable as well. As you can see, this group is broad and unique. And equivalent to the group, our list of the best rated portable cribs is the same. Broad, exact, and unique!

We have reviewed and rated numerous portable cribs, but only a few made it to the top! In order to reduce the confusion, and make our lists as transparent as possible, we divided the best models into three groups.

Based on the results of our reviews, we have compiled three separate lists of:

The best portable models in 2019:

  1. Best rated portable cribs made from wood
  2. Best travel cribs (Playards or Pack’n Plays)
  3. Best baby nests and bassinets

Wooden portable cribs

Best rated portable Travel cribs

Nests & bassinets

Note!

We can NOT compare the best-rated models in those three groups amongst each other, as there are too many differences between groups.

For instance, we didn’t compare travel cribs to portable cribs made of wood. Instead of that, we had found the best models in each type and arranged them into their own groups.

Don’t know which type of portable baby crib is the best for your family needs?

In my opinion, you need to think about the distance at first. How far will you carry the crib? Will you take it on trips and vacations? Or you only want to move it around the house?

Although this is important, there are other things to consider as well. Like safety, the weight of the crib, folding mechanism and more. You can read them on at the end of this article, where I have described them precisely.

Best rated portable cribs made of wood in 2019

More about wooden portable baby cribs:

Portable cribs made of wood can be used every day. They are more compact, sturdy, and comfortable as travel cribs. But they weight more, and you can’t fold them into a small package.

Anyway, most of them have a folding mechanism, so you can fold them flat and store in small spaces until another use. That’s why these models are a perfect choice for a grandparents’ or caregivers house.

This group of portable cribs contains:

  1. full-size folding cribs on wheels
  2. full-size baby cribs on wheels that do not fold up
  3. mini folding cribs on wheels

Best full-size folding crib:

Dream On Me folding full-size crib

Best rated portable cribs: Dream On Me full-size folding crib

THE GOOD:

  • patented folding system
  • wheels with locking mechanism
  • adjustable mattress height
  • it is available in seven different colors
  • affordable price
  • a safe crib
  • timeless design
  • when folded, doesn’t take a lot of space

THE BAD:

Petite moms could have problems with reaching over the rail to pick up a baby when the mattress is on the lowest position (But on the other hand: when you place the mattress into the lowest position, your baby can already stand alone. So picking him up, won’t be a problem.)

More about Dream On Me full-size folding crib on wheels:

If you want a full-size portable crib, this is one you must consider. Along with the affordable price, it has everything a crib of this type must have!

DESIGN:

We were impressed by how easy and quickly this crib folds up! Dream On Me has a patented folding system, so there is no need to disassemble the crib. The systems allow you to fold up the crib flat and store it until another use. The folded crib does not take up much space since the crib’s design is not bulky at all.

The whole design is minimalist, and we love it. The crib has clean lines, with slats on all four sides of the crib.

SAFETY OF THE CRIB:

The distance between slats is smaller than the maximum prescribed distances! Also, the crib doesn’t have a dropping side, which is banned since 2011! In general, we were very pleased with the safety and quality of this bed!

THE WHEELS:

Another great advantage of this crib is its heavy-duty commercial wheels with locking mechanism. When you unlock the wheels, you can move the crib easy and smooth. But when they are locked, they keep it sturdy in place.

Baby’s little place tips:

  • If you intend to move the crib from room to room, you should always think about the size of your room doors. Does the crib fit through your door frame?
  • Due to the Dream On Me simple design, the crib is not wide, so you shouldn’t have any problems!
  • Don’t forget to lock the casters when your baby is in the crib!

THE VERDICT

Although this crib could be an everyday bed, is generally used as a secondary crib. You can easily move it from room to room and fold it up in a minute. The fact that the folded crib doesn’t take a lot of space was another factor to classifying it on this list.

It is a great choice for grandma’s house, caregivers, daycare or guests with babies. As the crib takes the regular full-size mattress, your baby will have a comfortable place, with a lot of space to sleep. In our opinion, the crib has everything a wooden full-size portable crib should have!

Best wooden portable crib on wheels that do NOT fold up:

DaVinci Jenny Lind 3-in-1 convertible crib

Best rated portable cribs: DaVinci Jenny Lind

THE GOOD:

  • meets all required safety standard
  • four adjustable mattress positions
  • includes detachable wheels for portability
  • wheels with locking mechanism
  • it brings classic, vintage-inspired charm to the nursery
  • the crib grows with your child
  • a huge number of available non-toxic finishes

THE BAD:

  • safety guardrail for a toddler bed is not included in the price (you can convert the crib into a daybed, without any additional purchase)
  • you might have to pay extra for special colors, but we are talking only about a few dollars

More about DaVinci Jenny Lind 3-in-1 convertible crib:

A beautiful Davinci Jenny Lind. If you like a vintage style, you will fall in love with this crib. But besides the beautiful design, Jenny Lind has lots of other features that place this crib on the top.

It certainly belongs to our list, but you need to be careful what you expect from the crib! DaVinci Jenny Lind is the best amongst full-size cribs on wheels that do not fold up!

If you need a crib only for occasional use, and you want to store it when it’s not in use, this one is not the best choice for you. The crib is portable because it has wheels and you can push it around the house, but that’s it.

When I first saw DaVinci Jenny, I was immediately impressed by the timeless design and a wide selection of colors. I am not sure if I saw a crib with the wider color selection before Jenny Lind. You can get it in an impressive ten different colors. I also love the fact that you can pick between unusual colors, like coral or lagoon.

There will be no problems with matching this crib with any nursery furniture!

But the unique design is not all that DaVinci Jenny Lind can offer to you. It is a convertible crib, and it is a 3-in-1 convertible crib, that will grow with your child. When your child outgrows the crib, you can transform Jenny into a toddler bed, and later into a day bed as well.

THE VERDICT

This crib will last for many years to come. It is not just a crib on wheels but a full-size, convertible crib. Compared to cribs in the same group, that gives DaVinci Jenny Lind an added value. If you don’t mind that the crib doesn’t fold up and in addition like a vintage style, you can not miss with purchasing this crib!

Best mini crib on wheels:

Babyletto Origami mini crib

Best rated mini portable crib: Babyletto Origami

THE GOOD:

  • it meets all the required safety standards
  • quality folding mechanism
  • wheels roll smooth
  • a modern design
  • a wide selection of colors
  • available in unique colors
  • doesn’t take a lot of space
  • adjustable mattress support: 2 levels
  • the better alternative for bassinets

THE BAD:

  • the price is little higher
  • your baby will outgrow it sooner as a full-size crib

More about Babyletto Origami mini portable crib:

If you have read my articles about Babyletto, you already know I love their designs! Anyway, Babyletto Origami is not on our list of the best rated portable cribs because of my taste but because of its quality and safeness! If the crib would not be safe, we would not even think about it, let alone to place it on this list!

Babyletto Origami is a mini crib, so it is a perfect choice for small spaces and urban living. Because it is smaller, it fits through door frames. And because of the wheels, you can easily move the crib around the house.

Don’t forget, Origami is a mini crib, so you need a mini mattress for it!

We like its folding mechanism, and the fact that the folded crib is so small you can store it even in a closet. Wheels roll perfectly and smooth. Of course, there is also a locking mechanism, so the crib won’t move while the baby is in it.

THE VERDICT

Babyletto Origami is an aesthetic mini crib, designed for modern families. It is a perfect solution for small nurseries or a better, sturdier replacement for the bassinet. Also, it lasts longer as a bassinet!

The crib is lightweight and folds up well, so you can actually put it in the car and take it with you wherever you go. Nevertheless, for the holidays, when you already have a lot of luggage, we recommend choosing a travel crib.

Best bang for the buck:

Delta Children portable mini crib

Best rated portable cribs: Delta Children Folding Mini Baby Crib

THE GOOD:

  • affordable price
  • 1,5″ mattress is included in the price
  • easy moving around the house
  • wheels with locking mechanism
  • easy-to-fold-up mechanism
  • it doesn’t occupy a lot of space
  • two-position mattress support
  • five different colors
  • a better alternative for bassinets

THE BAD:

  • it can scratch easily
  • your baby will outgrow it sooner as a full-size crib

More about Delta Children portable mini crib:

This crib is so unbelievably cheap that we had to check up if it meets our expectations. And for such a price you couldn’t ask for more!

Yes, maybe the details are not so carefully crafted as with Babyletto, but it is a much cheaper alternative. Especially, if you need it only for occasional use, few visible holes shouldn’t divert you from the purchase.

And you don’t get just a crib, but a 1-inch waterproof mattress as well. If your baby won’t use the crib all the time, the mattress is OK. But if you intend to use the crib every day, we suggest you buy a thicker mattress.

You can afford it, as you saved a lot of money with purchasing the crib.

Delta Children mini crib has an easy to fold design. It folds up flat and doesn’t occupy a lot of space. The wheels run smooth, and when they are locked, the crib is strong and sturdy enough.

THE VERDICT

A perfect and cheap solution for a secondary crib in grandparents’ or holiday house. It is also a good crib for the first months of baby life because it is a better and more comfortable substitute for the bassinet. Because it is a wooden crib, it is way more sturdy and stable as a bassinet.

And the fact that it is cheap does not affect the safety of this crib. Delta Children mini crib meets all required safety standards!

Best baby nests and bassinets

What is a baby snuggle nest?

There is a lot of different names for baby nests: baby bed for co-sleeping, close and secure baby sleeper, portable infant bed,…

Baby snuggle nest is a new concept in baby gear, that more and more moms are calling a “must-have.” Why? Because it can effectively replace other larger baby essentials like bassinets.

A baby nest is a great product for co-sleeping. You placed on your bed, so you have the baby close to you, but with her own space to sleep.

The baby is safe in the nest, so it is much safer than co-sleeping in the same bed. Nest’s sides prevent her from rolling out of the nest. And even more important, the frame prevents you from accidentally rolling over your child.

Babies can sleep comfortably inside the nests, and many nests can also double as a portable bed and even a changing table. As they fold up small, they are perfect to bring along on the trip. With her own nest the baby feels at home even when you are away.

What is a baby bassinet?

A bassinet is a baby bed which is smaller than a mini crib. Most bassinets should only be used until the baby is 15lbs or can roll over on his own. Typically, this occurs between four and six months of age.

Bassinets have shallow surface and are generally designed to work with fixed legs or casters. They are great for nighttime feedings and keeping the baby in your room.

A portable bassinet is helpful if your baby has overnights at grandma’s, for taking the nap in the living room or anywhere else than in the nursery. Some bassinets can even fold up, and they can be a great alternative for travel cribs. But only for the first months of baby’s life!

While baby outgrows the bassinet fast, it can be a comfortable sleeping space for your baby during the first months. Newborns feel more at ease in a smaller, cozier space.

How we compiled our list of the best rated portable cribs in 2019?

After our comprehensive research and lots of interviews with parents who already have a portable crib, we made a list of the most desirable models.

Then we found out what features are the most important for this type of crib. We had carefully evaluated them.
After reviewing lots of models in each group, we summed up points and made the lists of the best rated portable cribs in each group.

If you don’t know what type is the best choice for you, you can use those factors as a portable crib buying guide.

1. THE DISTANCE:

Do you need to move the crib between different locations? How far apart are they?
As I already mentioned before, it is important how far will you carry, or transport the crib. Do you want to move it around the house, transport it to grandparents or travel with it?

2. THE PURPOSE:

  • Will you use the crib only in one house?
  • Do you intend to travel with the crib?
  • Will you take the crib on a plane, bus or train?
  • Do you want your portable crib double as a Playpen?
  • Do you want a convertible model?

3. CAN YOU FOLD THE CRIB?

  • All travel cribs fold down, but the time needed for folding is different from model to model.
  • Portable cribs made from wood can or can not fold down!

4. THE MATTRESS:

All travel cribs come at least with a basic travel mattress. Regular portable cribs usually don’t have mattress included in the price, so you have to buy a mini or a full-size crib mattress, depend on a wooden model you choose.

5. THE SIZE OF THE CRIB:

Do you need a mini or full-size portable crib?

6. THE SIZE OF THE FOLDED CRIB:

Travel cribs fold smaller than portable cribs made from wood.

7. PRICE:

What is your budget for a crib?

8. SAFETY:

All cribs on our list meet the required safety standards!

9. THE DESIGN:

Of course, the crib should be appealing, fits in your environment, with a beautiful design.

  • I’m not sure if I’m wrong, but I regard wooden cribs to be more of a certain fixture in a bedroom rather than being portable, but perhaps that’s because I’ve never seen one before?

If I was going to have a portable crib then I would go for a travel crib as it looks easier to transfer from room to room or to another house.

Is the travel crib easier to transport over a wooden portable crib?

    • You are not wrong. Majority of wooden cribs are meant to stay in place!

However, there are wooden cribs on wheels that you can move from room to room.
Of course, portability, in this case, means something completely different as with travel cribs or Pack’n Plays.
Yes, portable wooden cribs are a great choice for occasional movements around the house, but for traveling or lots of movement around the house, picking a lightweight travel would be a better decision!
Because parents have different expectations for portable cribs, we included all the portable types in our list. To minimize the confusion we have divided our list of the best rated portable cribs on smaller sections as well.
